Poetry Month Celebration at the Hoyt Library featuring Mary Ida Gilbert and Glenda Joy Race

54193007

National Poetry Month is a celebration of poetry first introduced in 1996 by the Academy of American Poets as a way to increase awareness and appreciation of poetry in the United States. It is celebrated every April in the United States and (since 1999) in Canada as well.

Why write poetry? Poetry is a way of self-expression, and serves as a vessel to our emotions where a person can feel free to express, in an artistic fashion, what is on their minds. It gives comfort, relaxation, inspiration, and uplifts some our most dire moments to bring peace to our hearts, and a new meaning to life.

The Hoyt Library is inviting the community to celebrate National Poetry Month on April 29th, from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Light refreshments will be served.

Guests will include: Mary Ida Gilbert who won acclaim for her poem, “A Dream”, which has appeared in the National Library of Poetry and won the editor’s choice award, and was also published in their book, “Sound of Poetry”. Many of Mary’s poems have appeared in the Greater Pittston Profile, the Suburban News, and the Tudor Book Store. In addition she was nominated for the Times Leader’s 2005 Jefferson Awards, and won  the Award of Recognition, for Outstanding Achievement in Poetry from the Famous Poets Society, numerous times. She was featured in Got Verse, valley poetry anthology.

Also, Glenda Joy Race will discuss her twenty line poem, Pain in My Brain, which children and adults can illustrate based upon their own experiences. MS Race is a teacher, writer, and mental health advocate. She taught in South Korea and in Northeastern Pennsylvania. She holds a PA teaching certification in English and Social Studies, and is also a Reading Specialist, and English as a Second language teacher. She writes poetry, skits, and personal narratives. She has self-published Awareness, Acceptance and Appreciation, a collection of memoetry, alternating between poetry and personal narrative.

Bring your own poetry to read!
