Poetry Month Celebration at the Hoyt Library featuring Mary Ida Gilbert and Glenda Joy Race

54193007

National Poetry Month is a celebration of poetry first introduced in 1996 by the Academy of American Poets as a way to increase awareness and appreciation of poetry in the United States. It is celebrated every April in the United States and (since 1999) in Canada as well.

Why write poetry? Poetry is a way of self-expression, and serves as a vessel to our emotions where a person can feel free to express, in an artistic fashion, what is on their minds. It gives comfort, relaxation, inspiration, and uplifts some our most dire moments to bring peace to our hearts, and a new meaning to life.

The Hoyt Library is inviting the community to celebrate National Poetry Month on April 29th, from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Light refreshments will be served.

Guests will include: Mary Ida Gilbert who won acclaim for her poem, “A Dream”, which has appeared in the National Library of Poetry and won the editor’s choice award, and was also published in their book, “Sound of Poetry”. Many of Mary’s poems have appeared in the Greater Pittston Profile, the Suburban News, and the Tudor Book Store. In addition she was nominated for the Times Leader’s 2005 Jefferson Awards, and won  the Award of Recognition, for Outstanding Achievement in Poetry from the Famous Poets Society, numerous times. She was featured in Got Verse, valley poetry anthology.

Also, Glenda Joy Race will discuss her twenty line poem, Pain in My Brain, which children and adults can illustrate based upon their own experiences. MS Race is a teacher, writer, and mental health advocate. She taught in South Korea and in Northeastern Pennsylvania. She holds a PA teaching certification in English and Social Studies, and is also a Reading Specialist, and English as a Second language teacher. She writes poetry, skits, and personal narratives. She has self-published Awareness, Acceptance and Appreciation, a collection of memoetry, alternating between poetry and personal narrative.

Bring your own poetry to read!

The Second Annual Titanic Tea Presentation at the Hoyt Library

While it has been almost 101 years since the Titanic sank, a number of myths and legends have emerged about the infamous ship. The RMS Titanic was a British passenger liner that sank in the North Atlantic Ocean on April 15, 1912 after colliding with an iceberg during her maiden voyage from Southampton, UK, to New York City.

The sinking of the Titanic caused the deaths of over 1,502 people, many of which were families coming to from another country to settle in the Wyoming Valley. This sinking is considered as being one of the deadliest peacetime maritime disasters of modern history.

                       ****************************************************************

Join the Hoyt Library on Monday, April 15th, from 2:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., to commemorate this fateful event with a Titanic Tea Presentation.

Special guest will be Mr. David DeCosmo, a past WYOU broadcaster, and a volunteer host and producer with Electric City Television, a public Access Station, who will present a personal and historical history of the many lives, and survivors, in the Wyoming Valley affected by the sinking of the Titanic.

Afternoon festivities will include additional surprises, and a creative hat contest. Participation certificates will be given to three of the most time period hats. Hats, however, are not required for attendance. Delicious refreshments will be served, and an opportunity to win a beautiful piece of jewelry, donated especially for the Hoyt Library’s Titanic Tea, by Studio M Design of Division Street, Kingston, a special sponsor of this event.

In addition, we are asking those in attendance to bring their own fancy tea cup to the program for the tea tasting, and to share, if any, their tea cup’s history.

Registration is required and a non-refundable fee of $10.00 per person is due at the time of registration. No registrations will be taken without the fee. Space is limited to 40 participants. Final date to register is Thursday, April 11th by 7:00 p.m.
