2nd Annual Barbie on the Fashion Runway Event

Join the Hoyt Library on Monday, March 4, from 6:00 – 7:00 p.m., to celebrate Barbie’s birthday with our 2nd Annual Barbie on the Runway Fashion Show!

Children in grades K-6 are invited to attend, and to bring their favorite Barbie or Ken doll dressed in their fanciest outfit to the Hoyt Library and walk the fashion runway.

Participation is limited to one doll per child, and their fashion coordinator, with a maximum attendance of twenty dolls. Fashion coordinators may also dress up for the event and join their Barbie on the runway!

Prizes will be awarded by a special drawing, and all participants will be able to make a special craft while enjoying delicious light refreshments.

In addition, all participants will receive certificates of participation.

The Oscars

You’re invited to The Oscars at the Hoyt Library!

Join us every day from February 18 to 22 to see previously won Academy Award winning movies, and take some time to vote for your favorite 2013 nominees. Best animated films from previous years will be shown.

Then, on Friday, February 22, join in the fun by visiting the Hoyt in your most glamorous attire and receive a delicious special sweet treat made by Sweet Dottie, while supplies last! Only those dressing up will receive the specially made treat.

On Monday, the Hoyt will announce the winning patron whose Oscar ballot correctly chose all the Oscar winners in each category, and then they will be presented with their very own “Oscar” trophy for their cinematic expertise.

The Academy Awards, better known as The Oscars, are given yearly for excellence of cinematic achievements in various categories of the motion picture industry. The Academy Awards are overseen by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, and has enormously has grown since its first appearance in 1929, and is the oldest award ceremony in the media. This year the Oscars, along with the Hoyt Library, will be celebrating its 85th birthday!

Come early and vote! Voting closes by the end of the day on February 22 and only one ballot per person will be accepted.

National Book Award Finalist

The Hoyt Library is happy to announce that Etruscan Press Poet and National Book Award Finalist, Tim Seibles, will host a poetry workshop at Wilkes University from 1-2:30 p.m. this Thursday, February 14th. The workshop is free and open to the public.

College and Career Workshops

College Ready

The Hoyt library has scheduled the following four Teen Workshops presented by Jennifer L. Severini-Kresock, MS, a Private Career and College Counselor, of NEPA Career and College Counseling Associates for high school students and their parents.

The first workshop, Preparing for the SAT and ACT Test, will be presented on Saturday, March 2nd from 1:30 to 3:00 p.m.It will contain helpful tips on how to survive these tests and helpful preparation strategies.

The second workshop, Career and College Counseling 101,on  Saturday, March, 16th, from 11:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m., will offer parents and students tips for successfully navigating the college search and the application process while providing strategies for developing a career pathway. In addition, standardized testing requirements, suggestions for writing essays and resumes, financial aid and scholarships will be discussed.

Best Fit, the third workshop, will be held on Saturday, April 13th, 11:00 a.m. -12:30 p.m., and will tell how to exactly determine your “best- fit” colleges; how to determine what each college really considers when making their acceptance decisions; ways students can differentiate themselves from others with similar grades, test scores, interests and aspirations; and the keys to maintaining your scholarship and financial aid opportunities.

The final workshop, Financial Aid, will be on Saturday, April, 27th, 11:00 a.m. -12:30 p.m. It will prepare parents and students, mentally and financially, on the college process. This parent- led seminar will provide information about scholarships, financial aid forms, and other resources to help you begin. Parents with students in the 10th and 11th grade will be given first preference, (but limited to), for admission to this workshop.

All workshops are free of charge and definitely aid in the application process for college!
